Boswell is proud to be leading the design and construction management of the largest CSO tank in New Jersey for the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority.
In many towns, stormwater and sewage share the same underground pipes, and during heavy rain, these systems can overflow, releasing untreated water into local waterways. Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) tanks protect the environment by storing excess water until it can be properly treated.
North Bergen, NJ’s CSO tank, with an impressive footprint of 35,154 square feet, will serve multiple communities and provide a vital safeguard during storms – representing a major step forward in infrastructure resiliency in the area.
One of the project’s most impressive milestones so far: completing the tank’s massive base slab with a single continuous concrete pour. In an effort that required months of planning and coordination, 4000 cubic yards of concrete were sourced from 4 plants, delivered by 370 trucks, and pumped steadily for over 12 hours – creating the 3-foot-3-inch base for the tank. To minimize disruption and avoid traffic delays, work was conducted overnight on a weekend. Thanks to Boswell’s leadership and the dedication of the entire team, the pour was completed flawlessly.
Boswell is at the helm of a collaborative effort with HDR and Montana Construction to bring this tank to fruition, and the success of this pour reflects the expertise and collaboration of contractors, suppliers, and engineers. When complete, the North Bergen CSO tank will stand as a landmark in New Jersey’s infrastructure—ensuring that when the rains come, everything stays where it belongs.
